Is bio-based plasticizer POLYSORB® a gateway to greener polymers?

Traditionally, plasticizers have been made from petro-chemical products. In recent years, however, there has been a drive towards bio-based plasticizers such as those produced by French performance plastics specialists, Roquette. These kind of plant-based plasticizers offer multiple advantages, not least their more environmentally-friendly credentials. POLYSORB®  one the other hand, is a pure isosorbide. Polysorb is completely plant-based and Phthalate-free. Offering an alternative to the use of BPA, this sustainable diol complies with the EU’s REACH regulation and is therefore perfect for applications and products which are likely to come into direct contact with humans. This could include anything from children’s toys to school furniture and hospital and other interior floors and surfaces. Its impressive mechanical, optical and shock-resistant properties mean that Polysorb is also of interest to the logistics and packaging sectors.

Isosorbide: a revolution for thermoplastics and resins?

POLYSORB®  Isosorbide represents a significant step forward in the sphere of thermoplastics and resins, more specifically:

  • Epoxy resins
  • Unsaturated resins
  • Polyurethanes
  • Polyesters
  • Polycarbonates
  • TPU

Isosorbide offers improvements in a number of key areas. Its use will enhance resistance to high temperatures, certain chemicals and UV light, make it easier to colour (or render transparent) the end product and deliver a softer feel to products of which it is a component. In its guise as a chain extender, it has a major input into the production of inflatable boats and rafts, casters and instrument panels. For more information on Isosorbide or other starch-based products serving the paper manufacturing and agri-food industries, to name just two, you may want to contact Roquette using their online form.
